The Wedding Present Cup: Stage 2, Group B

The Results

Once again, voting patterns varied, although in most individual cases they were broadly similar to the last group - for example, John, James and Gricey were again the only ones to give at least a point to every song. One difference was the amount of maximum 25s awarded - only 10 this time, compared to 16 in group A. The total number of zeros was very similar though (54/51).

Another notable difference is that this time there was a very distinct top, middle and bottom, with sizeable gaps between fourth/fifth (61 points) and tenth/eleventh (31).

Poor old 'Loveslave' (with its disturbing video) got the wooden spoon, getting an eight from both Harry and Keg but little else from the rest of the panel. 'Boing!', 'Swimming Pools, Movie Stars' and 'All This And More' all had their supporters, but got too many single-figure scores to have any hope of progressing. The two most divisive songs were 'Science Fiction' and 'Mystery Date'. Both received a hefty 24 from Kirk and a handful of high marks from others, but they also attracted 18 zeros between them.

There was a very clear top four. 'A Million Miles' got 20+ points from almost half of the panel - only Keg (6), Kirk (2) and Harry (zero) lacked enthusiasm. 'Octopussy' and 'Blue Eyes' received almost universal support, even though Keg only upgraded his 'churlish' (his word) zero first-round mark for the former to a two. 'Blonde' also qualified easily for the last 32, despite single-figure marks from John, Bob and Keg.

In mid-table, 'Click Click' was another divisive track, getting five scores of 16 or above, but also receiving five zeros. 'This Boy Can Wait' came second in its first-stage group, but whilst it is regarded with affection by many, ten single-figure scores left it a long way short of the top four. It was a similar story with 'Once More', which got at least two points from everyone, but lacked big marks. 'Crushed' managed third place in its first-stage group, but languished in ninth here, the result of group 4 being somewhat weaker than group 3.
