The Wedding Present Cup: Stage 2, Group E

The panel must award a total of 136 points to the songs in these groups; no song may receive more than 25 points, and they must give points to at least 10 of the 16 songs. The top 4 go through to the last 32.

The Results

There was a fairly high level of consensus with this group, with the average marks awarded to the top four (64.9) being the highest so far. The number of maximum 25s given out (23) was also the largest we've had up to this point.

As expected, 'Dalliance' dominated the group, with by some distance the highest overall total so far - only Harry gave it a single-figure mark. There wasn't much in it between the other three qualifiers. 'Carolyn' and 'Anyone Can Make A Mistake' both picked up a solitary zero (from Joanna and Kirk respectively). Kirk - along with Gav M and Mike - were less convinced by the merits of 'Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft' than the majority of the panel.

'Santa Monica' (which was the best-performing Going Going track in the first round) was in contention for a top four spot for some time, but was ultimately scuppered by zeros from Ian and Gav M and low scores from Bob, Ali and Mike. 'Rotterdam' became the first Seamonsters track to go out of the competition, despite 25s from Gav M and Mike.

'Felicity' got the wooden spoon here. Given that, of the remaining covers, 'Getting Nowhere Fast' came sixth in its group and the other three only squeezed through in eighth from theirs, it now seems almost certain that the last 32 will be entirely made up of originals.

'I Am Not Going To Fall In Love With You' managed the best performance by a 24 Songs track so far, finishing in a creditable sixth. This means that 'Each Time You Open Your Eyes' is the last new song standing. The exit of 'Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah' means that there won't be a Watusi song in the last 32. 'Kansas' came fourth from bottom here, leaving only two Saturnalia tracks ('Hula Doll' and 'Venus') in the competition.

There weren't any notably divisive tracks this time, although 'Go, Man, Go' (which came third in its first-stage group) did get a zero from three of the panel as well as a couple of 20+ scores. As a result, it could only manage seventh place here. Mini songs did well in the first stage, but none have progressed from the second stage so far, and only 'Mercury' and 'Drive' now remain.
