The Results

This group saw the biggest level of consensus so far, with an average score of 65.4 for the top four being the highest yet. The trend of judges focusing their marks on their biggest favourites continued, with the greatest number of 25s (61) and zeros (24) we've seen up to this point.

'Hula Doll' getting the wooden spoon here was no great shock, given that it only just managed a qualifying place in Group 11, receiving seven zeros. Joanna gave the song its highest mark then, and it was only her 14 here that rescued it from the ignominy of getting the lowest second-stage total (that unfortunate accolade currently belongs to 'Pinch, Twist, Pull, Release', which only managed 32 points). 'Venus' is now the only Saturnalia track left in the competition.

'Go-Go Dancer' and 'It's What You Want That Matters' were also a long way off the pace. 'Shivers' didn't do a great deal better, despite decent marks from Keg and Ali. Neither 'Two Bridges' nor 'Wales' were rescued from failure by 25s from Kirk; only 'Rachel' and 'Fifty-Six' now represent Going Going.

There were two particularly divisive songs this time. 'Each Time You Open Your Eyes' was another to receive a maximum 25 from Kirk, as well as a hefty 23 from John - but it also got zeros from ten of the panel. 'It's just not very good,' was Keg's blunt assessment. Its demise means that there won't be any 24 Songs tracks in the last 32. 'Mars Sparkles Down On Me' has always divided opinion, and this was reflected in high marks from Johnny, Joanna, John and Steve M, but nine zeros from other judges.

'Gone' performed well in the first stage, finishing second in Group 11. Its support fell away here though, with zeros from Harry and Gav M and only Gav F giving it more than 15. 'Mercury' continued Mini's run of songs doing well in the first stage but falling short in the second; only 'Drive' remains now. 'Lovenest' came fifth, its progress hampered by another zero from Johnny and a single mark from Kirk. It becomes only the second Seamonsters track (the other being 'Rotterdam') to exit the competition.

'Come Play With Me', 'Bewitched', 'I'm Not Always So Stupid' and 'Suck' were, in the end, clear winners. But there wasn't always complete consensus: 'Come Play With Me' got a zero from Kirk; Ian, Steve M and James only awarded 'Suck' four points between them. A total of 294 for 'Bewitched' was the strongest second-place finish so far, and was actually higher than Group B winner 'A Million Miles' (291). Similarly, third-placed 'I'm Not Always So Stupid's 280 final score was greater than all of the silver medalists in the previous groups.
