The Wedding Present Cup: Last 16 knock-out round - ties 5-8

Dalliance v Carolyn

Can Dalliance be beaten? After romping through the last 32 with a 17-0 whitewash of 'Nobody's Twisting Your Arm', it again sailed through here, this time against much tougher opposition.

15 Dalliance
 2  Carolyn

Come Play With Me v Bewitched

I have, in nearly all cases so far, stuck with the rankings on my blog. In this case, I had 'Bewitched' at #8 and CPWM at #11, but I found myself wanting the latter to go through here. The rest of the panel had other ideas, however; for example Steve M, who described CPWM as 'alright, but nowt special.' Several judges found this choice a particularly tricky one; not Kirk though - Bewitched being 'probably the easiest choice of the eight' for him.

 7  Come Play With Me
10 Bewitched

You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends v Don't Touch That Dial

According to Keg, it was this one that was 'the toughest tie.' YSAKITWYF has had a relatively smooth passage through the competition so far, but it faced stiff opposition here. Gav M was 'not too sure why YSAKITWYT is held in such high reverence' and, as he has throughout the competition, lauded 'Don't Touch That Dial' as, 'the perfectly archetypal DLG song.'

10 You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends
 7  Don't Touch That Dial

Interstate 5 v Dare

A heavyweight contest for sure. This time, I stuck with my blog ranking (which had I5 at #10 and Dare at #15). For Gav M, this was the only one that gave him pause for thought. 'I won't mind at all if Dare beats I5,' he stated, which is just as well, as his final vote for the latter wasn't quite enough to deny 'Dare' victory.

8 Interstate 5
9 Dare

And so, the line-up for the quarter finals is:

  • My Favourite Dress v I'm Not Always So Stupid
  • What Have I Said Now? v Flying Saucer
  • Dalliance v Bewitched
  • You Should Always Keep In Touch... v Dare

A seperate page re statistics is not really worthwhile at this stage, but here are a few facts for you:

QF songs chronologically

1986 You Should Always Keep In Touch...
1987 My Favourite Dress
1988 I'm Not Always So Stupid
1989 Bewitched / What Have I Said Now?
1991 Dare / Dalliance
1992 Flying Saucer

QF songs' ranking on my blog

 5  Flying Saucer
 8  Bewitched
 9  Dalliance
13 My Favourite Dress
15 Dare
17 You Should Always Keep In Touch...
34 I'm Not Always So Stupid
41 What Have I Said Now?

Winners picked by each judge

7 Harry / Ian / Bob / Ali
6 Johnny / Keg / Gricey
5 Steve / Gav F / John / Steve M / James / Mandy / Mike / Kirk
4 Joanna
3 Gav M

Judges most / least in agreement
  • The most compatible couple were Keg and Gricey, who voted the same way in every tie.
  • Johnny and Ian were almost as harmonious, disagreeing only once (CPWM / Bewitched).
  • Gav M, for once the outlier, only shared two votes in common with Harry, Ian, John, Steve M and James. He had much more in common with fellow outlier Joanna - they agreed on every tie except Heather/Flying Saucer.
  • James and Kirk only voted the same way twice (MFD and Bewitched); the same was true of both me and Mandy and Steve M and Mike (MFD and Dalliance in both cases).
  • Joanna and James had the least in common: Dalliance was the only song they both voted for.
