Statistics from the first stage

Now that we've reached the end of the first stage, I have the opportunity to peruse my spreadsheet and provide you with some stats. 

It's worth noting, of course, that each song's performance was at least partially dependent on the group in which it appeared. For example, Take Me!, Flying Saucer, Dare and Niagara would all probably have scored much more highly had they not been pitted against each other in group 16.

If you take my blog as a guide, then group 5 was the strongest overall, followed by group 9 and group 2. Group 15 was the weakest, closely rivalled by groups 10 and 11. (Not that everyone agreed whole-heartedly with my evaluations, of course, but in the majority of cases, the comments suggested a reasonably strong correlation.)

The Panel

For each round, I compiled the points that each judge awarded to the eight songs that qualified (the maximum being 55). According to this, my own choices were the most in line with the overall judgements. It will surprise none of those involved that Kirk was by far the biggest outlier.

I also looked at the overall level of consensus in each group. By this measure, Group 12 had the highest level of agreement (50.5), followed by Group 5 (49.3). At the other end of the scale, Group 2 had the least consensus (41.8), followed by Group 7 (44.4).

The Wedding Present Cup: Index / Introduction

Scroll down for an index of posts... Welcome to the Wedding Present Cup competition. We will be voting on the 223 songs I covered in the Suddenly It's Tuesday blog plus the tracks from 24 Songs . As I pointed out in the blog, the whole notion of ranking the songs is of course fundamentally flawed, and this cup competition will be no different. But that doesn't mean we can't have fun doing it... Comments expressing disagreement, support, exasperation or disbelief are welcome, as long as they are constructive and polite! The Format The first stage will consist of 16 groups of 15/16 songs, chosen by a random number generator. Votes will be in 'Eurovision style', i.e. 12/10/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1. The top 8 from each group will go through. The second stage will consist of 8 groups of 16. The top 4 of each group will go through.
